Within Reach: Visiting 100 Sustainable Communities

A presentation on sustainability with Ryan Mlynarczyk and Mandy Creighton

Liberty Hall Cinema

In celebration and exploration of all things green, two bicyclists are on a year-long journey around the U.S. to share what they've learned about sustainable communities. Ryan Mlynarczyk and Mandy Creighton have traveled more than 6,000 miles to visit and film 100 sustainable communities of all types, working to capture in film the abundance of community-oriented solutions out there that are already working. The result of their effort will be "Within Reach," a feature-length documentary to be released in 2011.

The two film-makers will be sharing with us what they have learned along their journey with an interactive presentation, video-clips from the film in progress, and a dynamic group exercise to help recognize the gifts and skills our community already has to create a bright green future here in Lawrence.

Films For Action is a local non-profit group that uses the power of film to raise awareness of important social, environmental, and media related issues not covered by the mainstream news. Through our website, public film screenings and Lending Library, we're working to empower citizens with the information they need to take an active role in creating a more just, sustainable, and democratic society.

For those of you who have not heard, two young people have been biking cross country since October 2008 on a mission to visit 100 sustainable communities. Along their way they are creating a film about how sustainable communities function throughout the USA. On Thursday, May 20 they will be stopping in Lawrence and presenting an "Intro to Sustainable Communities" from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm at Liberty Hall.

When Mandy and Jeff heard about Cordley's Farm-to-School lunch on Friday, they re-arranged their schedule and we are excited to have them and their crew join us for lunch.

For more information on their project and the communities they have visited, go to:

Or better yet, join them at Liberty Hall Thursday night.
