Dave Loewenstein’s year long Give Take Give project, centered around the gift economy and stories connected to the Social Service League's dumpster, will culminate in the release of a sixty page book and evening of storytelling at the Lawrence Percolator (in the alley behind 913 Rhode Island). The public is invited to attend a potluck on Saturday, May 11th from 7-10pm at the Percolator. Loewenstein and other contributors to the project will be on hand to sign books, and tell stories about the beloved dumpster through the things they have found in it.
The dumpster behind Lawrence’s Social Service League has for decades been a well-known spot for urban gleaners and culture diggers. Loewenstein has documented this alternative economy, hidden in plain sight, through inventories of the dumpster’s contents, interviews with participants, and photographs highlighting its treasures and context. Give Take Give was launched in part to celebrate the dumpster before it is impacted by a new hotel development that threatens it.
