Kahlyn's 5k run/5-block walk

Regal Southwind Stadium 12

Kahlyn Heine was a native of the Clinton community. She was an extraordinary and beloved daughter, sister, and friend, whose frequent beautiful smiles and goofy humor brought joy to all who knew her. Kahlyn was a graduate of Lawrence High School and Washburn University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and had been inducted into Mortar Board. While a student in Lawrence Kahlyn was an active member of the LHS orchestra and choir. She was also very active with Douglas County 4-H. Kahlyn had a passion for helping others, especially children with special needs. her entire life she aspired to be a special education teacher. She accomplished that dream in fall of 2012 when Shawnee Heights Elementary School hired her as a special education teacher. Sadly she only had a few weeks to do what she loved, in September of that same year, she was the tragic victim of a murder-suicide in Topeka. The Heine family honored Kahlyn's memory and the legacy of her dedication to people and the community, both near and far through the development of the Kahlyn Heine Legacy Foundation, a recognized 501c3 in the State of Kansas. The Foundation sponsors a 5-K Run/ 5-Block Walk each year to raise money for a scholarship fund established in Kahlyn's memory. Two $1,000 scholarships are given each year; One to a member of the Douglas County 4-H and the other to Lawrence High School student. As a care-giver for special needs children and Shawnee Heights teacher as well as an active member of the community, Kahlyn gave fully of her love and talents.  Her generosity of spirit, love of people, and contribution to those in need inspire us still.
