Kaw Valley Seed Fair to feature seed exchange, exhibits

LAWRENCE, KAN. — The 8thAnnual Kaw Valley Seed Fair is scheduled for Sat., Feb. 11, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St., Lawrence, 66046. Admission is free for all ages.

The Seed Fair is a local pre-spring celebration where people can share seeds, information and other gardening and seed-saving resources. The event drew more than 1,000 visitors the past three years, and this year, fair organizers expect a similar crowd. The 2016 fair is expected to include more than 25 area exhibitors. They will offer educational demonstrations and information, gardening products, and local farm products. The fair also will include a seed exchange and a raffle for various gardening-related prizes.

The seed exchange will take place at a central set of tables where gardeners may drop off garden seeds they will not use, including seeds produced in their home gardens as well as purchased seeds. Heirloom, open-pollinated seeds are especially welcomed. The exchange also will include books, videos, catalogs, and other gardening and seed-saving resources. Anyone may contribute seeds and other resources to the exchange, but no one is obligated to make a contribution in order to obtain seeds or other materials from the exchange table.

Food from the Purple Carrot Coop of Lawrence, will be available for purchase throughout the day, and tables will be set up near the kitchen.

The fair’s purpose is to foster a network of people committed to growing and eating locally produced food and sharing seed varieties that are native to or thrive in the Kansas River Valley. The fair also serves as an event that builds excitement about the coming growing season. It provides a venue where visitors and organizations can share information that helps the general public learn about the pleasures of growing their own food; where to obtain organic, open-pollinated and local seed lines; and how to save, store and plant seeds from their own gardens.

Each year, a unique poster is created by a local artist for the Seed Fair. This year’s poster was designed by Wil Mysilvy, a Douglas County teenager. Posters are hand-colored and posted at businesses and public sites throughout Lawrence about 10 days before the fair.

Brightly colored handbills with information on the Seed Fair also will be distributed throughout Lawrence.

More information about the fair is online at www.facebook.com/kawvalleyseeds. See the Events tab for the most recent information about this year’s fair, including a list of exhibitors and the food menu.

The Seed Fair was established in 2010 by Douglas County residents.
