SUMMARY:Dirty Projectors
URL;VALUE=URI:http://www.lawrence.com/events/2009/nov/09/34470/
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Dirty Projectors are one of the most unorthodox — yet wholly listenable — experimental rock bands on the map. Built around and axis of lightning-fast guitar runs and R&B-influenced beats\, it's a bit like throwing M Ward in the mix with Destiny's Child. Or like Talking Heads — minus the big suits.

SUMMARY:Why? / Au / The Moore Brothers
URL;VALUE=URI:http://www.lawrence.com/events/2009/nov/10/33961/
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Why? is a band that operates out of the Oakland Bay Area under the bold banner of the Anticon collective. At the band's helm is Yoni Wolf\, who writes and sings and has also been known to dance\, play any instrument he can get his hands on (piano\, keyboard\, guitar\, bass\, drums\, harmonica)\, sample and occasionally beat his chest like a gorilla. The group's latest LP "Alopecia" continues to mess with the musical pundits\, challenging its discerning audience with poetically vulgar lyrics and a myriad of musical styles.\n\nWHY?'s new manager\, Blake Maxwell from anticon. on Vimeo.

SUMMARY:Tap Dogs
URL;VALUE=URI:http://www.lawrence.com/events/2009/nov/11/31595/
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:The Lied Center of Kansas and Capitol Federal Savings presents Dein Perry’s TAP DOGS\, a Broadway show designed and directed by Nigel Triffit—Wednesday\, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m.\n\nCreated by two-time Olivier Award-winning choreographer Dein Perry\, with a construction site-like set by eclectic designer/director Nigel Triffit and a driving score by composer Andrew Wilkie\, TAP DOGS is rocking theatrical entertainment. Part theatre\, part dance\, part rock concert—TAP DOGS reinvents tap. The show’s performers are six athletic dancers who create mesmerizing rhythms\, stomping and taping to vibrant music. TAP DOGS features choreography inspired by the sights and sounds of the industrial heartland of Australia. Dressed like factory workers\, the dancers wear faded jeans\, flannel shirts and Blundstone boots. \n\nDein Perry\, creator and choreographer of TAP DOGS\, learned how to dance in Newcastle—a steel town north of Sydney\, Australia. At the age of 17\, with no professional dance opportunities in sight\, Perry worked as an industrial machinist for six years. He then moved to Sydney to pursue dance. After performing small chorus parts in Broadway-style musicals\, Perry was cast in the long-running Sydney production of 42nd Street. When it closed\, Perry decided to create a show inspired by his factory experiences\, featuring his dance friends from Newcastle.\n\nWith a small government grant and Perry’s old friends—who had also taken up various “real” jobs—he formed Tap Brothers\, an early incarnation of TAP DOGS. Perry then choreographed the West End musical Hot Shoe Shuffle\, which brought the group to London\, England and earned Perry an Olivier Award in 1995. \n\nTAP DOGS made its world premiere at the Sydney Theatre Festival in January 1995 and was an instant hit. The company played packed houses at Sadler’s Wells in London\, return tours of Australia and a West End engagement (that led to Perry’s second consecutive Olivier Award for choreography). \n\nTAP DOGS made its North American debut at Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival in August 1996 and then went on a limited North American tour before an off-Broadway engagement in 1997. There Perry earned a Drama Desk nomination for best choreography and an Obie Award. TAP DOGS was featured in the movie Bootmen\, directed by Perry\, inspired by his TAP DOGS experiences.\n\nSince its debut\, TAP DOGS has toured extensively throughout North America\, Europe\, Australia\, the Far East and South Africa\, and participated in the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.\n\nAdult\n$46\n\nChildren\n$23\n\nKU Student\n$23

DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Win tickets to this show!\n\nSince they signed on to Brad Nowell's Skunk Records label as teenagers\, SoCal's Slightly Stoopid has grown from a goofy skatepunk band to a still-goofy-yet accomplished punk-reggae act. Though they've yet to put out an album unreplete with pot references\, the group reaches beyond the stoner nation to attract fans of easy-groove acts like Jack Johnson and G. Love. They're also a reputable jam act\, stretching out songs in the live setting and occasionally going acoustic for the really mellow heads.

SUMMARY:Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca
URL;VALUE=URI:http://www.lawrence.com/events/2009/nov/14/31596/
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:The Lied Center of Kansas presents Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca performing an evening of authentic Spanish flamenco including dance\, song and music.\n\nCelebrated for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances\, Spain’s Noche Flamenca is recognized as the leading flamenco touring company in the field today. Under the direction of Martín Santangelo\, the company stages performances with the essence\, purity and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms. \n\nSantangelo co-founded Noche Flamenca in 1993 with his wife\, Bessie Award-winning Soledad Barrio\, the troupe’s lead dancer. The company tours regularly\, bringing the passion and culture of Spain to stages throughout the world\, including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival\, the Ravinia Festival\, the American Dance Festival\, Wolf Trap and the Hollywood Bowl. The company presents all aspects of flamenco—dance\, song and music—together onstage\, to create a true shared experience in its performances. \n\nWith annual seasons in New York City and Buenos Aires\, and return engagements at theatres around the world\, the company has a dedicated global audience. In support of its mission to educate and enlighten audiences about flamenco\, the company offers extensive residency programs that reach out to people of all ages. \n\nFlamenco originates from Andalucia\, the southern region of Spain. It emerged in the 15th century during the persecution and expulsion of Jews\, Gypsies and Arabs\, and expressed the grief and angst of the oppressed. Flamenco continued to develop\, gaining international popularity in the 20th century. \n\nIn anticipation of Noche Flamenca’s performance\, KU Associate Professor of dance Michelle Hefner Hayes and guitarists Beau Bledsoe and Frank Hoffman will present Flamenco For Everyone\, a free\, interactive performance on the history and structures of flamenco\, Sunday\, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center.\n\nWhile in Lawrence\, Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca will present a community master class on Nov. 13.\n\nFriends of the Lied are invited to a pre-performance dinner and presentation on the art of flamenco\, Saturday\, Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the Lied Center Ticket Office at 785-864-2787.\n\n\nAdult\n$26\n\nKU Student\n$10\n\nChild\n$10

Early singles from the disc hint at a soulful sound reminiscent of Van Morrison and The Band.
