An upcoming series of art events in October and November will combine the creative efforts of artists in Lawrence with those in Ottawa, Canada, and highlight a growing international art community in Kansas. The F.A.N. Club, a women artist support group based in Lawrence, is joining forces with the Northern Nine, a coalition of nine women artists from Ottawa, Canada, to present a variety of community art exhibitions and programs in several venues throughout Lawrence. This creative collaboration is part of an international exchange that began in 2001 when the F.A.N. Club group was involved with the "Common Ground" exhibitions and workshops in Ottawa, Canada. The follow-up art projects this fall will explore contemporary and cultural issues in both the United States and Canada under the theme of "Convergence."The festivities will revolve around several important shows, including "Convergence: Work by Canadian and U.S. Artists," an exhibition on view October 17 through November 30 at the Lawrence Arts Center featuring paintings, ceramics, sculptures, installation works and performance art by the Northern Nine and the F.A.N. Club. A concurrent exhibition, "Convergence: Paths and Structures," will be held October 15 through October 28 at the University of Kansas Art and Design Gallery, and include a large, collaborative artwork created by the Northern Nine, F.A.N. Club, KU staff and students, Haskell Indian Nations University, Lawrence and Free State High Schools, and other Lawrence artists and community members. In addition to the exhibitions at the Lawrence Arts Center and the KU Art and Design Gallery, FIELDS Gallery, the Phoenix Gallery, and several other downtown arts venues, will have work by "Convergence" artists on display during the course of this community-wide project.
