Description: Marty Olson has been working and living in Kansas since 1953. His work is rich with the stories and history of its people. Mamie Eisenhower and the Underground Railroad are subjects in a series of paintings titled “Kansas History and Politics 2006.” Expressions of the conflicts present in a dynamic and diverse state are layered with impressions of physical place.
Working in acrylic, Olson layers translucent papers, pearlescent paint, pointillist markmaking and decorative design elements. While the sensibility is abstract, there is often recognizable imagery built into the
underlying structure and layered over abstract form. The overall impression of a harmoniously overlapping and yet active surface is in some ways reminiscent of Harlem Renaissance artist Aaron Douglas.
Olson combines the formal elements of abstraction with narratives both personal and political to create works of both aesthetic beauty and political relevance. Marty Olson’s latest work may be seen at Pachamamas July 10 - September 9, 2007, with opening reception Tuesday July 10 from 6-9 pm.
Marty Olson’s work is available through Fields Fine Art, at fieldsgallery.com, telephone: 785.979.5173.
