EMU Theatre is proud to present the world premiere of “Let My Mind Flash With Blades,” the last two weekends in January. The show features University of Kansas alumni including writer/director Dan Born, producer Feloniz Lovato-Winston and the entire cast featuring award-winning playwright Dean Bevan as Freud, Samantha Raines and Liza Pehrson as,Hilda Doolittle (H.D.) and Frances Gregg respectively,
Based on the actual therapy sessions of Sigmund Freud and the poet Hilda Doolittle, “Let My Mind Flash with Blades” is a what-if exploration of their relationship. Doolittle befriended Freud in the 1930s and became his patient when she was suffering severely from writer’s block. Their multifaceted relationship incorporated their shared passion for art and culture, and their fondness for each other, as well as their fear of coming war.
The play’s title comes from a late Doolittle poem: “Let my mind flash with blades/let thought return/unravel the thick skein/woven of tangled memory and desire.“ Born believes Doolittle is referring to psychic vitality and an escape from neurosis.
The play runs Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18 – 19 and Jan. 25 – 26 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire in Lawrence, Kansas. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m.; doors open at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $7. The show is recommended for audiences 18 and over due to some adult content.
