Steve Keene's artwork is described as "somewhere between primitivism and mid-20th-century American representational art." But mostly he's known for painting so darn fast! He believes that every person should own an original piece of artwork, and as such, sells his stuff for $3-$5. He's sold over 180,000 paintings, none of which are especially artistically profound, but all of which are subtly unique. He is known for collaborating with bands such as Pavement, Apples In Stereo, and the Silver Jews to create album art, video sets, stage sets and posters.

Steve Keene rocks my socks! Keene has collaborated with the Silver Jews, Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, Soul Coughing, Dave Matthews Band and Merzbow to create album art, video sets, stage sets and posters. He has been all over the world and now Student Union Activities (SUA) is honored to have him painting live in the Kansas Union Gallery as an "artist-in-residence."

Be sure to check out his gallery reception on Thursday, January 26th from 4-6 pm. You can meet Steve Keene and there will be live music by Death & Flowers, as well as snacks provided by KU Catering!

The best part about Steve Keene is the fact that he gives people the opportunity to see art in action. I have never been able to see an artist (besides Bob Ross of course) start and finish a painting in a close, personal setting. It's amazing to see and something that is definitely worth checking out. Multiple times. Over and over.

Keene's artwork is so bright and dreamy that I often want to jump in them and stroll down his street scenes and or float through the vivid colors of his atmospheres.. and the best part is, I can own these adventures for $5!!!!

If you have not seen Steve Keene you have to. He works hard at what he does, and he does it quite well. If you have seen him before then I'm sure you've already been to see him again in the Kansas Union Gallery.
