This Lawrence photographer's life-affirming work may be among the most recognizable in town, thanks to her regular contributions to this site's nightlife photos. If you or your friends go out much at all, odds are good you'll see yourself in this show. Photos are for sale (affordable), so come ready to throw down for Christmas gifts! Here's Ailecia own write-up about this show...From the artist: the snapshot. a moment suspended in time. casual. posed. amateur. historians attribute the invention of the snapshot to the kodak brownie camera-an easy to use point-and-shoot camera released into the world at the turn of the 20th century. the brownie was noted for taking photography out of the hands of professionals and into the hands of those who could afford the camera, film and processing. now at the turn of the 21st century we are flooded by snapshot images: major advertising campaigns mimic the snapshot aesthetic and well-known photographers have used the medium to capture their own unique view of america and their place in it. for years ailecia ruscin worked in photolabs seeing snapshot after snapshot of the standard child's birthday party or families opening presents at the holidays. trained in photography at pittsburgh filmmakers, ailecia's early photos attempted to mimic the form and style of art photographers whose work depends on interesting perspectives or juxtapositions, expensive lenses, and a focus on form. in recent years, ailecia shed the conceptual art photographer's tools to return to her favorite photographic form: the snapshot.for the last year, many of you have seen ailecia's work in lawrence.com, both online and in print. unless you know her personally, you probably have not seen her faux photobooth photos, except maybe those showing off her 31st birthday in recent pages of lawrence.com. since her 25th birthday, ailecia has been using a clamp light, a tripod, a shutter release, and a brightly-colored background to create faux photobooths for her friends to ham it up in while at house parties. instead of printing them in the traditional photobooth 4-photo strips, she uploads her photos to her flickr site and encourages her friends to steal them for use as myspace profile pics. and for 50 bucks she'll come to your party to set-up a photobooth for your friends.for the month of december, ailecia ruscin's snapshots and photobooth photos will be on display both upstairs and down at henry's on eighth. all of the photos will be for sale at affordable prices (as low as $5!) you can expect to find images of all sorts of people from lawrence making faces, striking poses, and otherwise posin' it up for the camera. come to henry's and imagine it is 2047 and you're looking back at the retro fashions of the early 2000's. this is lawrencefuckingkansas in all of its' glory, as seen through the eyes of ailecia ruscin.come to the opening to meet the artist, take a photo in the photobooth, have a drink, or eat the free snacks. monday, december 3rd, 6-8pm. henry's on eighth, 11 e. eighth st., lawrence, ks. don't be surprised if you find your own face on the walls of henry's!
