This is some really good food and the guys serving it up are the real deal. This is a place i would love to eat at more often but it is inside of a gas station and usually only stop in when i have a short lunch break. the price is moderate and service is better then i was expecting. overall this is a good place that could benifit from its own building and perhaps being open later hours as of now they close up at 8 the drive through window is a great feature which i frequent. The guys running tihs little place deffinatly deserve a shot you should all check it out at least once

This place is solid. The owner is super-friendly and the food is authentic. The tortas (sandwiches) are good but not great, but the real deal are the dinners. The carnitas platter is outstanding. Everything I have had here is super-fresh, and they have pop in glass bottles which is always a great touch. I'd eat here all the time if I lived on the west side.

ahhh mexican tacos. corn tortillas, meat, cilantro, onion and salsa. what more can you ask for?
this place is the real deal, or at least as close as you're gonna get in lawrence, kansas.
they have an amazing tomatillo salsa and a red chile salsa, both pack a punch along with tons of flavor.
can't wait to try the rest of their menu!

The location (in the gas station) makes it appear a bit sketchy, but the food is great. The people working there were very friendly and it was by far some of the best mexican food I have had in Lawrence in a very long time. The breakfast burritos are phenomenal.

Best tortas ever! And, if you're in there when chile rellenos are the special, you're in for a treat!

I love this place! Get past the gas station setting and try some enchiladads, a burrito, some nachos.....or even better....a torta! There are plenty of vegetarian options and the owners will make anything you want and how you want it. The people who work there are wonderful too. This is definitely the MOST authentic Mexican food in town and definitely the best tasting. Give this place a try...they even have delivery now!

The food is great and the service is very friendly. The first time I went there I was kind of iffy about it, but once I tried, it was some of the best mexican I have ever ate. I hope no one will pass it up just because of the location. I will tell everyone about it!

This is the best mex in town! The food is authentic, so tex-mex fans may be disapointed with the lack of greasy cheese, but those seeking the genuine south of the border taste will be glad they stopped by. They have a small kitchen staff, and everything is cooked to order, so be prepared to wait. Since they've moved out of the gas station, they've gotten a real waitress. The new place is maybe 30x as big, which is a real improvement for those wanting to dine in. One look around at the crowd at lunch time will tell you that this food is real; 90% of the patrons are native Spanish speakers!

My sombrero's off to you! The food is sooooo good, authentic Mexican. We've eaten there several times since they moved into the building. Didn't know it had been in a gas station, but I would have gone there had I known.

The only downside was the waitress. An older lady, who wasn't friendly at all...and SLOW! And seems like we've had her every time. They need to tell her to be more friendly and SMILE or get someone else. But the food is so good, she won't keep us from going!

this place has horrible, horrible food. i got the steak fajitas, and the "steak" was cooked pieces of frozen steak that tasted like cardboard. it's expensive, too, for what you get. we won't go back.

"On the Border" who's that? If you want the real deal this is the spot. Great Food, I haven't had it this authentic since I've been back home. Lovin it since they were at the gas station.

Nice little restaurant, but lacking in some needed areas. Everything was alright, but not fantastic. Had the fish tacos, and for the cost, there just wasn't much on my plate. And what was on my plate was pretty fair, but nothing to sing songs about. My companions and myself became parched after waiting for refills on drinks. And in the end, it felt and tasted like we were in a tiny cafeteria.

No alchohol!?!?!! My wife needs margarita!

Better when they were in the gas station. There, you ordered at the counter; now, they have servers, but the service I received was perfunctory. Also, they charged--$1.50, I think--for chips and salsa, free in other venues. It's still the most authentic food in town, head and shoulders, but seems to me on the verge of becoming just another second-rate glorified taco joint--and Lawrence doesn't need another of those. Please, TJ, go with your strengths--simple, homestyle Mexican food--and leave the pretention and the stereotypes to El Mezcal and kin.

Very good and authentic. If you are looking for a more americanized mexican food...than this place is probably not for you. If you are looking for something more like what you would see in Central America than you have come to the right place.

Really good, authentic Mexican food, I loved it! But, watch out, the Ahogado sauce could burn steel!!

The owner, Angel, is a really nice person who serves up the best Mexican food in town. It is a small family-run business and well-worth supporting!

My friends and I love Tortas Jalisco. The food is really great, especially the gorditas with homemade Mexican chorizo and the owner is super friendly. There is a huge patio in the back which will be perfect for margaritas once they get their liquor license. I'll definitely bring my family here next time they are in town.

BAD EXPERIENCE! Waiter spilled salsa all over my daughter. Service was terrible. While they were not even full, our food took over ONE HOUR. We finally said pack it up to go and took it home. After all that the food was not very good at all. We will not go back.

The only thing good about this place is the fast seating, because nobody is eating there! The sign says cantina??? They do have a can, but no tina. The iced tea was ok... Save your money and go to taco bell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this place fast food or a sit-down restaurant? I can't tell, so I haven't been, yet.

I've eaten Mexican food all over the US, and the enchiladas were the best I've had outside of New Mexico. The soft tacos are also tasty. I'll definitely be a repeat customer.

The wait staff, with regard to large parties anyway, leaves much to be desired. Though a few things are tasty, chicken tacos, I've gotten sick each time and definitely won't be back.

Definitely the best Mexican food in Lawrence. Don't waste your money at Carlos O'Kelly's or La Parrilla! The only issues I have with Tortas is their small portions and the fact that you have to pay chips and salsa. I mean, come on, we have to pay for chips and salsa?! Give me a break!

On a positive note, they have the best tasting mexican rice I have ever eaten, and their orchata is very good.

I don't think kansans know what authentic mexican food is... this is probably another one of the "americanized" restaurants created to soothe the white man's appetite. Try tex-mex sometime. At least its got roots in the actual culture.

Actually bodacious_b, the food at Tortas Jalisco is fairly accurate and typical of what you would find in Mexico. Their tamales are delicious and so are their tortas. Many places in Mexico do not serve chips and salsa (typically only in resort/beach towns) but I have to say that they are quite tasty. It is a shame they do not get that much business but it could be because of its location, I don't know. I have spent the majority of my life in Mexico and very familiar with Mexican food. I do agree that many Americans do not have a cocept of typical Mexican food but I would recommend eating at Tortas Jalisco and giving it a try. The staff is really nice and I think they do a good job with making the food authentic considering it is in the middle of Kansas and some of the ingredients may be harder to find.

My favorite restaurant in Lawrence. I hope this place stays. I'll never forget the menudo that was on special one night, it was probably the most interesting thing I have ever eaten. Also, the fish tacos taste wonderful! I think most, if not all of the items on the menu are made from scratch. Yum!

The only downside is that Tortas Jaliscos is not downtown.

I can't say enough about this place. I think that El Mezcal had better watch it.... Tortas Jalisco makes far better food (although Mezcal is good).

This was the worst food I have ate in my entire life. Chips and salsa aren't free... or worth paying for. The cheese dip that we ordered was straight from the can, possibly expired, and probably the smallest portion I have ever seen in my life. The guacamole was a runny combination of processed avocados and the juice from canned jalapeƱos. The tacos that I ordered were too burnt and hard for me to bite into and filled with bland meat. Our server neglected to ever refill our drinks and the kitchen staff would frequently and suspiciously snicker in the kitchen, after looking into the few non-empty booths that happened to be their Friday night dinner rush. My fiance and I could barely manage to eat half of our plates, and needless to say, we didn't get a to-go box.

My sister said she loved this place; my experience there so far indicates to me that it must have gone seriously downhill in the past year or two. I cannot believe any of the good previous ratings based on my two visits there.

The service was slow and haphazard, due to very apparent inadequate staffing. Our server was doing his best, but just could not keep up because there was nobody else to help him.

The food was both smallish in portion and badly prepared, and did not appear to me to be in any way "authentic." Both times I ate there I came away wondering what the attraction is. A couple of items were actually stale-tasting and others were just blah.

Perhaps they should rehire the cooks they had in their glory days...or something. I won't be wasting my time and money there again. This is an ugly thing to say, but I'd rather eat at Taco Bell for the money.
