Although we're not currently hiring retained reporters, we frequently employ stringers for stories, illustrations, etc. To inquire about stringing, please call Phil Cauthon at 785-832-7270 to discuss story idea(s), deadline requirements, pay, etc.

Thanks to everyone who submitted applications for our latest job opening. We were flooded with a VERY talented pool of applicants, which was a blessing but made the decision difficult. We favored those currently living in and familiar with Lawrence and those who applied earlier in the process, all other things being equal. We ended up splitting the full-time job up into 4 part-time jobs, which is both better for us and for the four people we are lucky enough to work with every week. Not everyone has started yet, but if you're a regular reader of the site, you will be seeing the new bylines over the next few months.

Please know that your application was not entirely in vain. We will keep your writing samples and resumes on file and refer to them next time we have an opening ... which will hopefully be sooner than later (i.e. we're experiencing smashing successes, growing, and hiring, and celebrating excessively, etc. etc). In the meantime, please feel free to let us know what you're up to so we can check it out. Hasta luego - homies

SEEKING: lawrence.com journalist: Badass, award-winning journalism outfit seeks badass utility-player journalist.

You: kind, confident visionary with aptitude for (and at least some experience with) multimedia storytelling, perhaps including - but not limited to - some combination of the following skills and interests...
¢ sincere, motivated interest in the people and cultures of Lawrence, Kansas;
¢ creative writing skills firmly rooted in nuts-and-bolts journalism techniques and ethics; a consistent reader of news and culture from sources like The New York Times, Washington Post, Slate.com, Raw Story, the Nation, The New Yorker, Harper's, Jane's, The Economist, AdBusters, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, The Pitch, KC Star, the Lawrence Journal-World, and, of course...well, do we really need to say it? etc;
¢ a sensitivity to what makes a powerful image; a curious, persistent eye for striking, narrative images and an eagerness to learn techniques for capturing and/or manipulating said images with equipment and software;
¢ a fine-tuned ear for audio-based storytelling borne of years of absorbing radio programming such as the BBC, NPR news, Kurt Anderson, Garrison Keillor, Delores Jones, Ira Glass, Paul Harvey, baseball broadcasts, late-night AM talk shows, etc.; and an eagerness to learn techniques for producing audio-based stories;
¢ an appreciation for video-based storytelling borne of years of watching news, art, and pop-culture via TV, DVD, VHS, the Big Screen, YouTube, BitTorrent, etc. A cautionary aside: if you don't find Robot Chicken and the like hilarious, for example, you should probably think twice about this relationship - our particular sense of humor would likely be a source of constant sorrow.
¢ an INVIGORATING drive to be better than "competing" journalism outfits - save, of course, your fellow lawrence.comrads whom you tend to and nurture (tough-love-style) as if they were sprung from your very loins.
¢ and, perhaps most importantly, a healthy sense of humor and grateful attitude towards life that yields a forgiving, harmonious tendency towards your neighbor; as the Dude, you abide.

Us: kind, confident, super badass visionaries with mad aptitude, but wary of a rebound relationship given our imminent (amicable) parting with our 3-year - and for always, amigo! XOXO - love, Ricardo Gintowt, who has nards of (a lap) steel and is forsaking his cush, rewarding job with a regular paycheck and full benefits to embark on a full-time career in music. His band is OK Jones...highly recommended. (BTW if you have connections in the biz, we'd very much appreciate you hooking up his ass with a deal - the real deal, though, not some standard music industry fleece job.)

If you think you're ready to set sail on this sorta fantastic voyage, by all means, send us your measurements, portfolio, redeeming qualities, etc. - homies@lawrence.com - and if we think it could work out longish-term between us, we'll set something up. Thanks in advance for your sincere consideration, homies
