The Patriot

The battle scenes offer a new, grander dimension thanks to digital effects, but the screenplay seems reminiscent of many a war movie or Western. Gibson plays a South Carolina landowner who refuses to enlist because of his seven motherless children and a haunting memory of the French and Indian War. When he sees the British harm his own family, he organizes a militia that terrorizes the enemy. Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day") directed with vigor, and the John Williams score heightens the drama.

Director Ridley Scott's latest is a supremely atmospheric film that shrewdly mixes traditional Roman movie elements with the latest computer-generated wonders.
