Nutty Professor II: The Klumps

Eddie Murphy returns as shy, slovenly Professor Klump and his abrasive alter ego Buddy Love. The alter-ego theme didn't serve Jim Carrey well in "Me, Myself & Irene." But the lure of Eddie Murphy playing a variety of Klumps while co-starring with Janet Jackson may prove irresistible to the public. PG-13.

Amanda Peet made a strong impression in "The Whole Nine Yards" and was one of the few semi-good things about "Isn't She Great." Here she plays a "perfect woman" who causes three chauvinistic buddies to question their savvy at the dating game. When all three fall for the perfect Peet, they also question their friendship. R.

Sunset Boulevard

A re-release of the 1950s classic. The film is about a retired Silent star (Gloria Swanson) given, or so she thinks, the chance of a comeback by a failed screenwriter (William Holden) who has become a gigolo. At the time, critics admired the film, Hollywood loathed it and the public ignored it.

But I'm a Cheerleader

An undeniably funny if utterly obvious premise is squandered in the first feature film of Jamie Babbit, who sends wholesome teen-ager Natasha Lyonne to a rehab camp on the suspicion she's a lesbian; after all, she likes tofu and isn't turned on by her jock boyfriend's tongue-ramming make out style. For a film seeking to satirize the stereotyping of gays, "Cheerleader" is as shamelessly hypocritical as it is hopelessly unfunny; it's rah-rah-sis-boom-bah bad. R.

Highlander: Endgame

Some franchises just won't surrender. Christopher Lambert, who once made an appealing Tarzan in "Greystoke," returns as the never-say-die Highlander who joins forces with another immortal to rid normal Earthlings of the Ultimate Evil. R.

Saving Grace

Brenda Blethyn is sympathetic and appealing in a pleasantly formulaic British comedy of a middle-class widow raising some very illegal crops in her greenhouse. With Craig Ferguson, Martin Clunes. R.

Though the amazing computer-generated imagery makes its re-creation of the Cretaceous Period seem utterly, wondrously real, this story of an iguanodon who challenges the cruel leadership of a dinosaur herd remains more Disney than Darwin. Not only does it depict a world in which dinos and furry mammals can peacefully coexist, it avoids the subject of extinction altogether. Yet for all its kid-friendly cuddliness, it's a fantastic accomplishment. After a few minutes of marveling, you'll fall right into its prehistoric world. PG.

Gone In 60 Seconds

The annual summer fireworks display from producer Jerry Bruckheimer ("Armageddon," "Con Air") is built on the cheesy chassis of a 1974 drive-in movie, and puts Nicolas Cage in the driver's seat. He's a retired car thief who takes on one last job, stealing 50 cars in 12 hours, to save the life of his little brother (Giovanni Ribisi). Leaving aside anything like logic, the film, which co-stars Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Angelina Jolie, is competently made and forgotten in less than 60 seconds. The big chase, saved until the end, somehow manages to be exciting. PG-13.
