Orchids to be auctioned Sunday
Prairie Village ï¿½ The Orchid Society of Greater Kansas City will hold a plant auction at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Prairie Village Community Center, 7720 Mission Road. Plants can be viewed at 1 p.m.
Plants will range from species to hybrids and from seedlings to previously bloomed. The auction will include divisions of orchids from the collection of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.
The auction raises money to support the society's activities and worldwide orchid conservation.
Puppets take Crown Center stage
Kansas City, Mo. ï¿½ "The Wonderful World of Puppetry," an exhibition of more than 150 puppets and marionettes will be displayed Saturday through Sept. 4 at Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd.
The free exhibit includes Punch and Judy, Madame, the Muppets of "Fraggle Rock," Ol' Gus and many more.
Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays and Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays-Fridays; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
Free puppet shows will be offered at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday through Sept. 2, except for Aug. 5. On Aug. 5, a clown will perform at noon as part of Crown Center's Clown Day.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 15, several puppeteers, including Pat Brymer, Torey Southwick and Jane Henson, will meet the public.
'Letters on the air' lists July schedule
Kansas City, Mo. ï¿½ "New Letters on the Air," a literary program that is aired at 5 p.m. Sundays on KCUR-FM 89.3, will broadcast a series of recorded interviews with deceased writers in July.
The schedule includes:
ï¿½ Today: William Matthews, winner of the 1996 National Book Critics Circle Award, reads and talks about his works.
ï¿½ July 16: Muriel Rukeyser, a poet-activist, will read and talk about his works.
ï¿½ July 23: Walker Percy, the author of "The Moviegoer" and five other novels, talks about being dubbed a "southern" writer.
ï¿½ July 30: Michael Dorris, author of "The Broken Cord," which explored the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome on one of his adopted sons.
