Composer's conference features recitals, concerts

A composer's conference on Friday and Saturday will bring 45 composers to Kansas University for performances of their music in recitals and concerts by KU faculty, students, the KU Concert Choir, the KU Symphony Orchestra and various guests.

The Joint Kansas Symposium of New Music and Society of Composers Inc. Region VI Conference is a two-day festival of contemporary music called "Music Midst Us." Region VI consists of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.

During the conference, there will be seven concerts, including 50 works by participating composers, plus lectures on music in the 20th century. The lineup includes:

l Friday: KU faculty, students and guests concert, 1 p.m., Swarthout Recital Hall, Murphy Hall; "Hearing the Unspoken in Britten's Death in Venice," lecture by Shersten Johnson, music theory, 2:30 p.m., Swarthout Recital Hall (tentative); KU carillon students concert, 4 p.m., Memorial Campanile; KU Symphony Orchestra, performing works by Leonard Bernstein, Elliot Carter, Aaron Copland, Antonin Dvorak and Michael Sidney Timpson, 7:30 p.m., Lied Center.

l Saturday: "Understanding the Challenge of Writing Educational Music," lecture by James Barnes, music theory, 10 a.m., Lied Center; KU faculty and organ students, KU Concert Choir and Saxophone Quartet I and guest composer Pamela Decker, 11 a.m., Bales Recital Hall; Patrick Suzeau, choreographer, Muriel Cohen, dancer, Kansas Composers Project, KU students and various guest performers, 2 p.m., Lied Center; "Complex Adaptive Systems and Music: Any Similarities?" lecture by Deron McGee, music theory, 3:30 p.m., Lied Center; Kansas Wind Quintet, Musica Nova, Accordion Orchestra and trumpeter Keith Benjamin and other guests, 4:30 p.m., Lied Center; KU New Music Ensemble, Jazz Singers and Jazz Ensemble I, 7:30 p.m., Lied Center.

Admission is free to all events, with the exception of the KU Symphony Orchestra concert Friday night, for which tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for students.
