'Survivor' ends; recycling begins

As you might have heard, "Survivor" wraps up its second season today (7 p.m., CBS). And not a week too soon. It looks like the franchise is running out of steam. Last week's episode, featuring the series' second-to-last elimination, lost millions of viewers from the week before. Just as the show is supposed to be picking up momentum, viewers are fleeing.

While I'd like to think that my column last week calling "Survivor" one of the dullest shows ever had something to do with this, I won't fool myself. And don't go thinking that a heavily hyped "Friends" cost them viewers. No, "Survivor" and other early evening shows are up against the toughest competition of all. It's called Daylight Savings Time. Sunshine. Longer daylight. Given the choice between having fun outside and watching the contrived outback shenanigans, millions have opted to get a life. And that's a good thing.

Tina Wesson and Colby Donaldson are shown at an undisclosed location in this undated handout photo during an episode of "Survivor: The Australian Outback." The finale episode, where one person will win $1 million, will be broadcast as a two-hour special tonight on CBS.

CBS will waste no time generating instant nostalgia for "Survivor." Following the conclusion of the series, Bryant Gumbel will host a "Survivor Reunion" (9 p.m., CBS) reuniting the 16 castaways. The network will continue to milk the series next Thursday on yet another reunion called "Survivor: Back from the Outback." On this hour-long show, you'll get to visit the cast in their hometowns where they will reflect on their televised experiences. Not to be outdone, next Thursday's "The Weakest Link" will reunite cast members from the first "Survivor" season for a half-hour game of quick elimination.
