Atchison festival features art, airplanes

Atchison � The Antique Airplane Fly-in and the Riverbend Art Festival is set for Memorial Day weekend.

The 35th annual fly-in will be Friday and Saturday at Amelia Earhart Airport. It will feature displays of vintage aircraft. This year's featured airplane is the Nicholas-Beasley, which was built in the early 1930s. About 100 planes will be displayed.

The 36th annual Riverbend Art Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on Commercial Street. Artists will display and sell artwork from a variety of media.

Musical performances will take place throughout the weekend, and a selection of American and ethnic cuisine will be available.

Artists collaborate on 'Frontier' program

"Frontier," an hourlong program, will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Just Off Broadway Theater, 3051 Central, Kansas City, Mo.; and at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 2, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the Lawrence Arts Center, 200 W. Ninth.

Modern dance choreographers will present original works integrated with spoken word and original music composition by Korey Ireland. Artwork by Marcia Streepy, Donna Carrington, Jackie Warren, Cindy Alkire, Pam Peffer, Martha Heimbaugh and Patricia Hines will be incorporated throughout the hourlong program.

Dance highlights will include Sandi Bodge-Kay's "Eagle Prayer," which draws on her Native American heritage and experience as a modern dancer.
