Cable bumps up fright quotient

Halloween may be 12 nights away, but cable networks are already handing out tricks and treats. The Fox Family Network kicks off its "Thirteen Days of Halloween" series tonight with a repeat of the 1998 comedy sequel "Addams Family Reunion" (6 p.m., Family), starring Tim Curry and Daryl Hannah. A repeat of the "The Scariest Places on Earth" follows at 8 p.m. The fright fest begins in earnest Sunday with the original film "When Good Ghouls Go Bad" (7 p.m. Sunday, Family). Five original installments of "Scariest Places" begin Monday, and "A Night in Dracula's Castle: The Transylvania Dare" airs at 8 p.m. next Friday.

Al Pacino hams it up as Lucifer himself in the 1997 drama "The Devil's Advocate" (7 p.m., TBS), co-starring Keanu Reeves as a slightly confused legal eagle, and Charlize Theron as his delicate wife.

Tim Curry stars in "Addams Family Reunion" at 6 p.m. today on the Family Channel. The movie is one of several scary television programs scheduled this weekend.

Viewers in search of pointless, tasteless gore can find plenty in the 2001 horror sequel "Return to Cabin on the Lake" (8 p.m., USA). Judd Nelson reprises his role as a sick screenwriter.

Horror favorite Vincent Price stars in director Roger Corman's 1961 adaptation of "The Pit and the Pendulum" (9:35 p.m., AMC). Corman's series of movies based on ghoulish tales by Edgar Allan Poe enhanced his reputation as a "serious" director and provided a second wind to Price's flagging acting career. Followed by "The Deadly Mantis" (11 p.m., AMC), a low-budget 1957 thriller about a giant bug. Unleashed by an Antarctic earthquake, the creature smashes a lot of buildings in Washington and New York. Michael Weldon, B-horror-movie expert and publisher of the "Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film" (Ballantine, 1983) describes this as "a dumb film with lots of stock footage."
