Trio to get involved with community while in Lawrence

Pianist Navah Perlman, violinist Kurt Nikkanen and cellist Zuill Bailey have formed a trio and will perform a concert of chamber music at 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Lied Center.

As part of their performance they will present the world premiere of a work composed by Lowell Liebermann and co-commissioned by the Lied Center. The work is titled "Trio No. 2 for Violin, Piano and Cello, Op. 77."

The performance also will include "Sonata in G Major" by Antonio Lotti; "Trio in B Flat Major, Op. 11" by Ludwig van Beethoven; and "Piano Trio in C Major, Op. 87" by Johannes Brahms.

The trio has performed numerous chamber recitals and orchestral concerts throughout North America since its debut at the San Luis Obispo Festival. The trio last performed at the Lied Center in October 1999.

Perlman, Nikkanen and Bailey will take part in a three-day residency project that includes:

� Thursday: "The Listening Room," an impromptu performance and informal discussion of piano trio repertoire with the ensemble members and Dan Politoske, Kansas University professor emeritus of music history, 5:30 p.m., Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union.

� Saturday: Perlman speaks to the Kansas City Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, 3:30 p.m., Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.

� Nov. 4: Pre-performance lecture with Politoske, 1 p.m., Oldfather Warm-up/Dance Studio, and post-performance talk-back session with ensemble members, Lied Center.

� Nov. 5: "Getting to Know You," presentation by Perlman for preschool students from Hilltop Child Development Center, 10:30 a.m.-11 a.m., Swarthout Recital Hall, Murphy Hall.

� Nov. 5: Perlman and Bailey conduct coaching sessions with KU students, Murphy Hall.

� Nov. 6: Lecture and demonstration for high school orchestra students, 8 a.m.-9 a.m., Free State High School.

� Nov. 6: "Breaking into the Business," Perlman and Bailey to speak to KU music students about their experience as young performers, 2:30 p.m.-3:20 p.m., Murphy Hall.

The trio's performance on Nov. 4 will run about 90 minutes.
