University Theatre's production of "You Never Can Tell" is a light, airy comedy suitable for just about everyone.
George Bernard Shaw's 1896 play revolves around Lanfrey Clandon and her three children, who have recently moved back to England. Unfortunately, they move to the same town where their crabby husband/father, Fergus Crampton, resides. It's not long before the two parties meet and clash.
Outside the family drama lies a blooming romance between town dentist Mr. Valentine and the eldest Clandon daughter, Gloria.
The actors do a fine job maintaining the wit and pace of Shaw's writing. Kelly Mengelkoch and Matt Greer as the dopey sister-brother duo Dolly and Phil keep the laughs coming with their over-the-top acting, though it sometimes feels forced.
The chemistry between the lovers Gloria and Valentine, played by Rita DeLoach and Dylan Hilpman, is especially good. Their on-again, off-again relationship keeps the audience guessing.
Christopher Wheatley as Mr. Bohum appears only during the final act, but his quips are funny, his timing dead-on. Special guest star Dean Bevan portrays the waiter, William, who steals all the scenes he appears in with his dry sense of humor.
Audiences also will have to adjust to a turn-of-the-century vernacular and British accents. But if ever lost in the language or twisty plot, the audience can take in the scenery. The set, a rotating gazebo, is simple and serves its purpose well. The costumes are gorgeously done.
"You Never Can Tell" continues at 7:30 tonight in Kansas University's Crafton-Preyer Theater. It's definitely worth a glimpse.
