Lawrence artists hang exhibits in KC gallery

Kansas City, Mo. � Two Lawrence artists are showing their works at the Morgan Gallery, 412 Delaware Ave., Suite A.

Zigmunds Priede is showing an exhibit titled "Unfinished: Collaborations with Circumstance," which includes the collage "Unfinished," above. David Vertacnik is showing sculptures and assemblages in an exhibit titled "Sculpture in Wiley Nook."

Both shows run through Feb. 23. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Harlem Globetrotters to take over Kemper court

Kansas City, Mo. � The Harlem Globetrotters will perform at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kemper Arena, 800 Genessee. Proceeds will go to the Red Cross Relief Fund.

Members of the showcase basketball team are Paul "Showtime" Gaffney, Matt "Showbiz" Jackson, Michael "Wild Thing" Wilson and Sharavjamts "Shark" Tserenjanhor, a 7-foot player from Mongolia.

'Opera Is My Hobby' host to give talk in Topeka

Topeka � Jim Seaver, a retired Kansas University professor who hosts "Opera Is My Hobby" on KANU-FM 91.6, will talk about singers from Kansas whose careers have blossomed on the international opera scene, at 2 p.m. Jan. 13 in the Washburn University choral rehearsal room, 17th and Jewell streets.

The talk is being presented by the Topeka Opera Society and Concert Assn.

Choristers to begin season

The Choristers, a preparatory group for the Lawrence Children's Choir, will begin its new semester Monday. The Choristers is for children in grades 3-6 who can match pitch and enjoy singing.

Rehearsals are from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays at Free State High School. Tuition is required; however, scholarship opportunities are available.

Cellist and pianist pair for JCCC, Folly concerts

Overland Park � Cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd.

The duo will perform Beethoven's "Sonata in A Major." Conductor-composer Rob Kapilow will provide information about the musical masterpiece and then will conduct a questions-and-answers session after the work is played.

In addition, Finckel and Han will perform the five works Beethoven wrote for piano and cello at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Folly Theater, 12th and Central streets, Kansas City, Mo.

Fiction going on sale at Merriam library

Merriam � A Cabin Fever Fiction Book Sale will be Thursday-Saturday at the Antioch Library, 8700 Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Fiction books will be $1 for hardcover and larger paperback books and 50 cents for pocket-sized paperbacks. Some reference books also may be available.

Hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
