Golden Globe Awards up for grabs tonight

Call it the precursor to the Oscars or call it the lighthearted awards show in which the stars actually seem to enjoy themselves, but whatever you call the 59th annual Golden Globes, don't call them a joke.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. has turned its happy little tribe of about 90 scribes into a force to be reckoned with. Big stars show up, speeches, sometimes slurred, ramble, there's always a surprise winner and there's always something bizarre.

The 59th annual Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast at 7 p.m. today on NBC, channels 8 and 14 on Sunflower Broadband.

If you actually care who wins, nominees for best film drama are "A Beautiful Mind," "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "Mulholland Drive," "In the Bedroom" and "The Man Who Wasn't There."

Best film musical or comedy are "Moulin Rouge," "Bridget Jones's Diary," "Legally Blonde," "Shrek" and "Gosford Park."

On the TV side, nominees for best drama are "24," "Alias," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "Six Feet Under," "The Sopranos" and "The West Wing." TV musical or comedy nominees are "Ally McBeal," "Frasier," "Friends," "Sex and the City" and "Will & Grace."

Harrison Ford will be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
