Exhibit is snapshot of talent

The Lawrence Photo Alliance, a group of amateur and professional photographers, will mount an exhibition of its members' work Friday through Aug. 30 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

The exhibition, likely to include several works from each member of the group, will be held in the arts center's small gallery.

Rick Mitchell, gallery director at the Lawrence Arts Center, looks over some of the works by Lawrence Photo Alliance members that will be on display through Aug. 30 at the arts center.

It will be an opportunity for people who enjoy photography to view a diversity of styles, according to Rick Mitchell, gallery director.

"They all do different things. Some members work in color, some use alternative processes and others use digital cameras," he said.

"I think it will be a lot of fun for people who are interested in photography to come and see. It will be especially interesting for people who have wanted to learn more about photography and see on display a range of techniques."

The Photo Alliance, which has about 25 members, also is planning to hold its Kansas/KC Camera Exhibition annually at the arts center. The event is a juried show that's open to any Kansas photographer. That exhibition has been scheduled for 2003-2004, according to Mitchell.

The upcoming show of members' photography is an important event for the Photo Alliance.

"It's one of the feats of accomplishment for photographers to show their work. Most of the members do the kind of work that deserves a public showing. That's one of our main activities," said Leo Lutz, a Photo Alliance member and former president of the group.

Lutz plans to have some of his work in the show.

"I do black-and-white, large-format photography. Negatives (that are) 4 inches by 5 inches or larger. Just a variety of things, more architectural, landscape, abstractions," he said.

The Photo Alliance, which meets monthly at the arts center, is open to anyone who wants to join and pay a membership fee.

Members of the Lawrence Photo Alliance will show their works Friday through Aug. 30 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.A public reception will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. July 27. Tim Kelly, a professional photographer who teaches at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park and Washburn University in Topeka, will talk at 4:30 p.m.

"We've got some people who don't even have a camera. They just enjoy looking at photographs and talking about them," Lutz said.

Photo alliance member Hobart Jackson is excited about the exhibition.

"There will be a wide range of work, all of it enthusiastically presented. It's going to be a high-quality show," he said.
