Lifetime tackles Max Factor heir story

Monday, August 11, 2003

Based on court transcripts and news accounts, "A Date with Darkness: The Trial and Capture of Andrew Luster" (8 p.m., Lifetime) stars Jason Gedrick as the handsome heir to the Max Factor fortune who used the drug GHB to sedate women so that he could repeatedly rape them. And he videotaped them, too.

Marla Sokoloff ("The Practice"), Sara Carter and Stephanie Von Pfetten appear as three of his victims. Remarkably free of dramatic tension, "Date" methodically ticks off Luster's crimes, capture, escape and recapture. Like other movies of this ilk, "Date" treads the fine line between exploitation and education. For every queasy scene of a victim watching a tape of herself being violated, we receive a lesson about the evils of date-rape drugs.

What is the most dangerous animal on Earth? A stupid human with a short attention span. "Animal Cops: Houston" (9 p.m., Animal Planet) follows members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as they combat abuse and mistreatment across 2,500-square miles of Texas. Tonight, cops come upon an abandoned farm containing hundreds of exotic critters, including ostriches and wild boar, living in squalid conditions.

Speaking of human cruelty, the reality series "Who Wants to Marry My Dad?" (9:08 p.m., NBC) wraps up tonight. So which candidate will Don's kids choose? Will it be Christy, the former Miss USA who doesn't know how to boil an egg, or Christena, the event planner who has never dated a guy who wasn't rich?
