'Good Girl' a departure for Aniston

Saturday, August 30, 2003

Has "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston redeemed herself as a movie star? In 2002, the actress better known as Rachel stretched her wings in "The Good Girl" (9 p.m. today, Cinemax), a bleak little independent feature with moments of droll, dark humor.

Aniston plays a cashier at a failing five-and-dime who has tired of her pothead husband's (John C. Reilly) lack of ambition. To break the monotony, she embarks on a steamy fling with a young, "Catcher in the Rye"-obsessed co-worker (Jake Gyllenhaal) -- an affair that brings her more passion and drama than one woman can handle. Aniston won well-deserved praise for her performance in this movie about getting what you wished for (and then some). Not for the kids.
