Arts center grant to support bilingual play
The Lawrence Arts Center has received a $10,000 grant to support a bilingual play for young audiences.
The grant for development and touring of "The Magic Shoes of Pedro the Trickster" was awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, said U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan.
"The promotion of the arts fulfills more than a simple outlet for human expression," Moore said. "It highlights who we are as a culture and provides a channel of communication that might not otherwise exist, binding us together as a community."
The play, by Lawrence playwright Ric Averill, has been performed in Topeka and Mesa, Ariz. The grant will be used to make continuing improvements to the production and for future performances.
Ann Evans, director of the Lawrence Arts Center, will oversee the funding.
Design professor honored by national magazine
A Kansas University faculty member will represent Kansas in a national magazine due on newsstands Dec. 30.
Lance Rake, associate professor of industrial design, will be featured in the January/February issue of "I.D." magazine. The magazine profiled 50 designers -- one designer from each state -- to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
Rake's accomplishments include designing New Deal Playing Cards, which are designed to be held more easily by people with arthritis.
