Bush -- and his posse -- salute entertainers

Friday, December 26, 2003

Caroline Kennedy is host of "The 26th Annual Kennedy Center Honors" (8 p.m., CBS). She was called on to replace original host Walter Cronkite, who came down with laryngitis before this ceremony.

This year's recipients include singers James Brown and Loretta Lynn, actress and comedian Carol Burnett, director Mike Nichols and violinist Itzhak Perlman.

A raft of talent is also on hand to praise and present awards to the honored guests. President Bush and first lady Laura Bush are in the audience, as well as Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, former first lady Barbara Bush and former President George H.W. Bush, who also is a presenter. The first President Bush helps honor Loretta Lynn, who campaigned on his behalf in 1988.
