The KU Wind Ensemble will perform a concert that includes the premiere of a new composition by a Kansas University professor at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lied Center.
John Lynch, director of bands, will conduct the ensemble in a program that will feature a new work by Charles Hoag, KU professor of theory and composition, entitled "BACHanalia."
The piece is "a playful toying with the melodies of one of the world's greatest composers," Hoag said. "Essentially, I am taking Bach on a trip that he could not have taken in the early 18th century."
The program also will include a piece by Bach himself, "My Jesus! Oh What Anguish." It's one of a group of Sacred Songs and Airs, a collection of 69 single melodic lines with figured bass, published in 1736.
Other pieces scheduled for performance are "A Child's Garden of Dreams" by David Maslanka; "Smetana Fanfare" by Karel Husa; and "First Suite in E Flat" by Gustav Holst.
Admission is $7 for the public, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; the SUA office, 864-3477; and online at www.tickets.com.
