Lawrence Art Guild hangs annual All Members Show

Ann Durham draws inspiration from Southwest

Ann Durham's watercolors are infused with the intense hues of the Southwest. One trip to the region back in the 1970s and she was hooked.

"I have gone to the Southwest for many, many summers -- probably over 20 -- to paint," the Lawrence artist says. "I'm kind of enchanted by the brilliant color and the shifting shadows."

Her two paintings hanging through March 15 in the annual Lawrence Art Guild All Members Show -- "Daybreak" and "Pueblo Shadows" -- explore those particularly Southwestern qualities. They join 118 other works by 62 other Art Guild members on display at the Lawrence Arts Center gallery.

Durham has been with the Guild since she began showing her paintings at Art in the Park in the 1960s. But she got her start in art much earlier than that.

"When I was a little girl, my granddad used to set me on his lap and we would draw together," says Durham, who grew up in Oakley. "I've always wanted to draw. I've always wanted to paint. I've always had to do that."

Special to the Journal-World

"Pueblo Shadows," a watercolor by Lawrence artist Ann Durham, is one of 120 pieces on display through March 15 in the Lawrence Art Guild's All Members Show at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Durham received a bachelor's degree in art education and a master's degree in art at Kansas University and taught high school art for 34 years before retiring four years ago.

She's particularly fond of watercolor because of the "flow, sparkle and quickness" of the medium.
