Of Charlie Parker
By Matthew Porubsky
Darting and daggering tones, Yardbird blows
in those juttering, jabbing notes, downtown
out of the "K C Blues." It grows and grows,
tapping on the stage floor, knocking it down
all the way up to N Y C to bop
"Bloomdido," Dizzy, Monk, blowing, pounding
out blinding newness, slipping through each stop,
passing and "Relaxing with Lee," sounding
solos like random rain rippling puddles.
Blasting through smoke, blaring down streets, alto
notes echoing from Bird. Ulcers muddle
but drift in waves of melodic tip-toe
along a scale exceeding written word.
Fading, shining, falling, rising with Bird.
