Model: Laura DeVito
Age: 25
Hometown: Emporia
Occupation: Preschool teacher's assistant at Raintree Montessori / aspiring Hollywood actress and professional spelunker
Colorist/Stylist/Esthetician: Roxanne Klaus, Static Salon
Education: Roxanne attended Broken Arrow Beauty College in Tulsa, Okla. She belongs to the fourth generation of hairdressers in her family; her great-grandfather and grandfather were barbers in Japan, and she worked in her mother's salon in Oklahoma for a year before moving to Lawrence.
"I've known since I was a little girl that I wanted to do hair. I was a salon brat-I basically grew up hanging out there." Roxanne started at Sakaroff's in Lawrence, where she worked for 6 1/2 years, then opened Salon Kawaii, which she had for two years before opening Static in June last year.
The Color
"I'm going to darken Laura's color to soften her face. I'll use a light brown and honey chestnut combination: a nice, warm level six. It's a demi-permanent color by L'Oreal Professional, which is a step between semi- and permanent, and it's very conditioning. I'll do an all-over color, but it's somewhat translucent, so that her lighter shades underneath will show through to give her some highlights. It'll be illuminating!"
The Cut
"I'm going to take about six inches off, and then I'll give her some accent pieces on top to add more texture and frame her face, which will really open it up. To do this, I'm going to leave her strong perimeter and use a rotation technique, which allows me to leave the length while using shorter layers. Instead of traditionally layered hair, she'll have zigzag layers all around so that her curls will hang nicely and not produce the mushroom effect that normal layers would."
To give Laura a completely new look-and to show her that yes, straight hair is possible-Roxanne then went to work with a blow dryer, a straightening iron, and her favorite product: Pureology Super Straight Serum.
The Face
"Since Laura doesn't normally wear makeup, we're going to keep her on the soft side and do something a little more natural. I'll be using Bibo products by Graham Webb. I really like that line-it doesn't have any special perks, it's just a nice makeup."

Have you noticed any upcoming trends for fall?
"With hair, it's like anything goes right now. I don't really see any overwhelming trends at the moment, which can be good and bad: good because people can do whatever they want, but bad because some are still trying to wear their hair from the 80s-the bad 80s, not the good 80s. But hairstyles are all over the board right now; people are doing everything from short and spiky to long and layered."
