Area students among theater honorees

Outstanding students in Kansas University's department of theater and film were honored with awards and scholarships in two ceremonies last month: the Stage Supper, and the Film Student Recognition Ceremony and Tensie Awards presentation.

Douglas County students honored were Mark von Schlemmer, doctoral student, film, Baldwin, the Charles "Buddy" Rogers Scholarship; and from Lawrence, Fernando Arenas, doctoral student, film, Berg Family Film Studies Award; Dylan Hilpman, graduating senior, theater/voice, Shirley and Tom P. Rea Memorial Award; Eric Melin, senior, theater and film, Patricia Joyce Ellis Scholarship and Loren Dolezal Community Service Award; Kelly Vogel, graduate student, scenography, Ambrose Saricks Family Scholarship and Ethel Hinds Burch Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant in Theatre Award; and Anna Wieczorek, graduate student, scenography, Clarence Seaver Technical Theatre Scholarship.

Also honored was Bill Russell, who attended KU in the early 1970s and was awarded the Alumni Honor Citation. A Broadway writer and director, Russell received Tony nominations for the book and lyrics for the critically acclaimed Broadway musical "Side Show." His first musical, "Sun, Son," premiered at KU during the 1970-71 season.

Shirley Rea, a 1953 KU alumna, received an Award of Merit posthumously for her loyalty and support of the department of theater and film. The widow of theater professor and director Tom P. Rea, she died in late February in Lawrence.
