Street artist invited to lecture at KU

The Kansas University Department of Art has invited visual artist Chris Johanson to KU as part of the Visiting Artist Series.

Johanson will give a public lecture on his work at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Spencer Museum of Art auditorium.

Johanson is a street artist who has had no formal art training, but he has honed his trade while doing everyday jobs, such as painting skateboards and houses. He settled down in 1989 in a community of artists in San Francisco's Mission District.

Johanson's numerous exhibitions include the SITE Santa Fe's "Uneasy Spaces," in 2003, the 2002 SECA Award show, the 2002 Whitney Biennial, "East Meets West" at the ICA in Philadelphia and "Widely Unknown" at Deitch Projects in New York. He also has presented solo exhibitions at Jack Hanley Gallery in San Francisco and at the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
