Review: Sega Genesis Collection (PS2)

QuickView

Good: Fantastic emulation, some great titles

Bad: A couple stinkers

Sadly Missing: Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage

I remember back in fourth grade, I was enough of a loser to play a 24-hour Genesis marathon. I even constructed a giant construction-paper circle with sections representing each of my Sega games. I attached an arrow, and each hour I would spin it to see what game I would play next. This may explain why I didn't do too well with women back then.

Over ten years later, and many of the games from my Loser Wheel are all on one disc with the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2. It's been a while since I've played some of these games, and this collection serves as a fantastic reminder of how great they are.

In my opinion, the star of this title is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I experienced some major nostalgia when I booted it up for the first time in years, and it's arguably the best entry in the long-running series. Everything about it is exactly as I remember, from the lightning-fast platform gameplay to the excellent soundtrack.

Other classic titles are present as well, including the original Sonic, Phantasy Star II, III, and IV, Vectorman, Ecco the Dolphin, and Golden Axe. Unfortunately, there are also some games included that you'll probably only play once or twice (Gain Ground, Flicky).

Thankfully, all of the titles are emulated perfectly, and they're all 100% faithful to the originals. The ports are of amazing visual quality, and even look fantastic on large HDTV's.

Like the Capcom Classics Collection, the Genesis Collection features several Museum sections detailing the history of each game and other assorted info. It's nothing fancy, but hardcore Sega fans will probably find something to interest them.

When it comes to classic compilations, the Genesis Collection features a far superior "good-to-bad ratio" when it comes to the selections. Despite a couple of omissions, this title will give you plenty of hours of classic gaming at an extremely affordable $19.99 price tag.
