Where was/what doing when scouted?

Hanging with my family.

Favorite clothing store?

Arizona Trading Company is the only place I really do shop. I'm the kind of person that likes to dig through things. I like to root around and find gems. I never go in looking for anything in particular.

Other stores you frequent?

Diane's Artisan Gallery, above Round Corner. She has a really nice eye for well-made, beautiful things. She's a weaver, so she has wonderful woven things. Robert's got me some nice things there. And Spectators-I like to support the small guy. Kathy's got great taste and nice clothes, fancy things. I go in there for a special occasion-and the service is great. I also frequent Au Marche-they have nice cheeses as well as chocolates that I like.

How would you describe your style?

A friend of mine once described me as sporty slacker. A lot of the time I wear exercise clothes going to the gym and back, so I get where the sporty comes from. Slacker? Probably because I don't get dressed up a lot. I'm in my work clothes most of the time and I rarely get dressed up. But when I do, I usually realize I don't really have what I need, because most of the time I'm not thinking about being stylish.

Favorite trend for this season?

I don't feel like I have my fingers on the pulse of fashion, but I like all the denim I see. I like longer sweaters-for a while you had lots of bellies showing. I love boots, and hats of any sort.

Least favorite trend right now?

Pointy shoes, except boots-and I think we're going away from that. Leggings-I don't like the legging thing. Leg-warmers; I don't like those either. And I don't think sweatpants should be worn in public.

Where do you get your haircut?

I get my hair cut by Suzi at The Green Room. It's an intimate, eclectic environment. It's hard to keep short hair looking different. I'm willing to try almost any hair style-Suzi just gave me a modified mullet and I love it.

Favorite coffee shop in Lawrence?

J&S Coffee has the best coffee in town. I buy it so I can drink it at home because I don't hang out in coffee shops a lot. I'd love to, but with my schedule, it doesn't work out.

Favorite bar in Lawrence?

I work in the evenings a lot, and I'm the mother of two small children. I rarely get the chance to go to bars, but I do like a glass of wine at Teller's now and then.

Is there anything you'd like to see more of in Lawrence?

I would like to see more ethnic diversity-its very vanilla around here. More dining options. We spent time in NYC this summer. We had authentic bagels, we went to a lot of small ethnic places that were delicious. I'd like to see more of that.

Less of in Lawrence?

Less divisive issues at the city government level; the divided camps on what's best for Lawrence. Since I've been recently caught up in the swirl of it, I'd like to see less of it.

Are you a happy American?

Yes. I'm not a partisan person; I consider myself politically independent. But I'm happy to see the political process at work. It's great to see people change-I'm glad to see the process in action. I love our freedoms. I'm reading a book about Lewis and Clark and I'm so impressed by our spirit of adventure, that Americans feel like they can take on the world and make a positive difference.

Tell us a secret

I'll confess my guilty food pleasures: I have a fondness for canned green beans that can't be explained. And one of my favorite desserts is a Rice Krispies treat, unadorned.

Who's got style?

Robert Krause has style. He's about the coolest person I know. Someone with classic style like Gwyneth Paltrow-she's not going for cheap attention. My friend Shelly Gaudreau has style. She knows how to put it all together and it looks great.

Style = ?

Having confidence in who you are and not being afraid to show it. Looking at the whole picture, people tend to focus more on clothes-but the haircut makes a huge difference in how you look. Glasses can make you look very stylish. I have more respect for someone who owns a look, because it's more about their confidence than the look.
