A man walked into the Douglas County Clerk’s Office and requested records for Williams, Robin. “That’s not a joke,” he added.

A little later, an enraged woman stormed out of a courtroom upstairs. She threw something down the hall and unleashed a stream of obscenities as she left the building, with police jogging over to catch up with her.

In Division One Court, a man prepared to plead guilty to three counts of misdemeanor theft. His attorney described his crimes to the judge as follows:

On August 19, he drove a vehicle to several area businesses. At each business, a second man posing as a vending machine company worker would remove the gumball machine. After emptying the money from the machine, they would take it to another business and swap it for a new one. They hit Bargain Depot, Panda Garden, Copy Co., Hallmark, University Bookstore and La Mexicana.

After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to two years in prison and one year on probation. He stood with his hands behind his back, his left hand cupped in his right, a rubber band around his right wrist. He wore a bright orange hooded fleece jacket and dark pants.

“You’re so bright, your mom probably called you sun,” his attorney had said as he signed the plea agreement before the hearing. “Bad joke.”

The attorney had her daughter and stepdaughter with her. As the man had signed the paperwork in a quiet, mostly empty courtroom, they had made small talk about their children. He’d told her one of his teenage daughters wanted to be a dancer and the other wanted to be a drummer.

After the hearing, he spoke politely in the hallway outside the court. “I’m very sad that this whole matter happened,” he said. “I’m glad that it’s been resolved.”
