Style Scout: John Rasmussen

John Rasmussen

Age: 39

Sign: Cancer

Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colo.

Time in Lawrence: 10 or 12 years

Occupation: Industrial Designer, artist, and caricaturist.

What were you doing when scouted? I was drawing caricatures/custom portraits for the fall Arts & Crafts Festival in South Park.

Favorite stores? I mainly get my clothes from garage sales and estate sales. I go to the bargain store on 17th and Haskell, and I spend a lot of time at St. John's Rummage Store.

How would you describe your style? In general, low budget. I get my dockers from St. John's and my t-shirts I get from the races I run in. When I am doing caricatures, I try and make my style look different and fun for the kids. You want to wear something that stands out and makes the kids smile.

Where do you get your hair cut? John Amyx at the Amyx Barber shop downtown.

Favorite trends? I'm not one to follow fashion trends, but I do enjoy people watching and seeing what they come up with.

Least favorite? I laugh at the fact that people wear bellbottoms and now call them flares. I also don't like when people buy really expensive jeans with holes already made in them that are really beaten up.

Favorite coffee shop? La Prima Tazza, because it's been around the longest.

Favorite bar? I like The Replay Lounge on Monday nights because no one else is there and it's a quiet time to play pinball.

What would you like to see more of in Lawrence? Bike paths and bike trails, maybe even a bike trail from Topeka to Kansas City. I'd also like to see more artists and performers on the streets.

What would you like to see less of? I'd like to see fewer potholes, but other than that, I try to be an optimist and I like Lawrence the way it is.

Who are your fashion influences? Carrot Top, depending on the day. The Joker from the first Batman movie.

People say I look like: Tim O'Brien, and Waldo.

Tell us a secret: I once dressed up as Lyle Lovett to one of his concerts. I even have the picture to prove it.
