Kansas City rapper Steddy P grew up idolizing rappers like Tech N9ne, KRS-One, and Aesop Rock. Though P has yet to match the fame and fortune of said rappers, it’s not for lack of hustle. The young gun — age 25— has already embarked a number of tours and released four full-length albums, raising the bar with each show and accompanying glossy flyer. He’s too busy paying his car-insurance bills to even think about spinning rims.
P’s new disc “Style Like Mind” is a slickly produced collection spanning 30 years of hip-hop styles. St. Louis-based producer Ben Bounce signed on to produce the album after witnessing Steddy’s 1st place performance at a 2008 Scribble Jam battle competition in Columbia, Mo. Now that the secret’s out — yeah, Steddy is an MU grad — go listen to “Style Like Mind” and we promise you’ll forgive him.
Steddy spent some quality time with us prior to his upcoming tour with Lawrence’s Approach and St. Louis’s DJ Mahf and Earthworms, which kicks off Saturday at the Jackpot Saloon. Topics discussed include: Tech N9ne’s compound, DJ Jazzy Jeff’s ill-fated appearance at the Power & Light, Steddy’s IndyGround Entertainment label, and practicing in front of a mirror. Don’t laugh – it paid off.
