Isabel Boehms, student, server, metal smither, painter, etc., etc.
How do you save money?
"Basically by restraining myself. I'm a server, so all of the money I make is in cash. At the end of the shift I split it into two parts, half of it into a savings account where I can't touch it and half of it that I'm allowed to spend. I also always shop sales and go to the places where my friends work, hoping for discounts. Generally I try to use those hookups to get stronger drinks. I eat where I work, where I get a discount, because we have pretty decent food. For clothes I'll go to vintage stores or wait for whatever I want to go on sale, because it always does—or I'll just go to Target and get a cheaper knock-off of whatever I want. You can't go wrong with Target—it's by far one of my favorite stores. I love it. Another way to save is to flirt with a guy at a bar so that he'll buy you a drink. I've been guilty of that a few times, but I try to be really polite about it. If they buy me a drink I'll talk to them for 10 minutes. If I'm interested I'll talk longer, but if not, I've paid my dues. It's gotten me into trouble a few times, but it still works."
How do you splurge?
"Tattoos and trips out of Lawrence. I love Lawrence to death, but I feel like if I don't get out every month-and-a-half or so, it'll drive you nuts. I take weekend trips to St. Louis or San Francisco, where my cousin lives. Another splurge is clothes—if I've been eying something for a while, and especially if I've had a bad week, sometimes I'll go, 'F*ck it, you deserve it.' I went to Urban Outfitters recently and spent about $200. F*ck it, I deserve it!"
