What to do in Larry, Friday edition

The Republic Tigers are (L to R): Marc Pepperman, Ryan Pinkston, Kenn Jankowski, Adam Mcgill and Justin Tricomi.

The Republic Tigers @ Granada

In the last two years, Kansas City's Republic Tigers have toured Britain with Travis and the U.S. with Nada Surf, performed on the Letterman show, been featured on iTunes, and cracked the elusive commercial-radio charts. In short: they've "arrived." Thanks to hella spins and viral word-of-mouth, the group's success outside of KC is mirrored in its hometown. Whereas you might have caught the group alongside 50 people two years ago, you'll likely have to wait a bit longer for a drink this time around. Consider a bourbon press or another classy cocktail to accompany the Tiger's intricate and flavorful blend of rock, pop, and electronic sounds.

California Craisins

Cloud Dog (who recently recorded this podcast with us)

Dutch Newman

Eagle Us Pets

Burger Kingdom

Hidden Pictures

Katlyn Conroy

Avi Morgenstern

All eight will compete in the first round, taking place at the Bottleneck on tonight. The four finalists by audience vote will advance to the Jackpot on Saturday.

Last weekend! "The Glass Menagerie" @ University Theatre

Tennessee Williams’ classic drama, under the direction of Jack Wright, features original music composed by Paul Bowles for the 1944 premiere production. Originally written as a screenplay for MGM, the play stemmed from one of Williams’ short stories. It is a memory play, narrated by Tom and based on the memories of his mother, Amanda, and his sister, Laura. Amanda’s husband left the family years before, and she remains stuck in the past. Tom works in a warehouse, chafing under the boredom of everyday life and spending much of his spare time watching movies...more on the production, including our full review.

Disco Disco with DJ ParLe' and the RevolveR Crew DJs @ Fatso's

Every Friday DJ ParLe' & the RevolveR Crew DJs spin Top 40 remixes, hip-hop, house, and classic party tracks. Ladies no cover before 11pm.

Samba Nite Benefit @ Cielito Lindo

All the profits from this party will benefit educational and cultural programs promoted by the Brazilian branch of the Two Brothers Foundation in the Rocinha shantytown in Rio de Janeiro. DJ Nick Rivera will be playing a selection of old-school samba and Brazilian ballroom dances. There will be instruction available for those who want to learn some new steps. Also provided will be some Brazilian and Latin American finger food.

Shots Fired @ Jackpot

Kansas City's angular rockers Shots Fired recently reunited and have been playing the Kansas City circuit pretty regularly. This is the band's first Lawrence show since getting back together. Amongst the ranks are members Zachary Aaron, Billy Johnson, TJ Matthews, and Cory White. RIYL: Helmet, Mineral, Drive Like Jehu, and any of the hundreds of bands these dudes have played in (The Esoteric, Reggie and the Full Effect, Frogpond, etc.).

The Get Up Kids in Kansas City

Lawrence's The Get Up Kids return for two area shows — albeit in KC — following their three-month reunion tour in support of the 10 Year Anniversary release of their fan-favorite album "Something to Write Home About" (which comes with a DVD and seven previously unreleased demos). The 18+ and older crowd at these shows should feature plenty of attendees who came of age to the tune of the band's energetic pop rock. Doors at 8pm.

And new in movies...

A Education

This disarming and unexpectedly poignant story set in 1961 follows a dreamy, Oxford-bound 16-year-old (enchanting Carey Mulligan) who takes up with a sophisticated older man (Peter Sarsgaard). Pungently realized by filmmaker Lone Scherfig from the memoir by Lynn Barber, it's a timeless story about life choices.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

The "Twilight" soap opera continues with a lighter, goofier and less erotically charged sequel. The threat of sex is gone in this golden-hued virginity metaphor. But it's a funny film, a movie in on the joke that the most luscious girl in rural Forks, Wash., might be fought over by pale vampires and buff Native-American werewolves.
