Best of Lawrence 2012: Best New Restaurant

Queen Lizzy's Fish and Chips

125 E. 10th St.,

Lawrence Journal-World

Matt Poulton is owner of Queen Lizzy's Fish and Chips, winner of Best New Restaurant in the 2012 Best of Lawrence contest.

Queen Lizzy’s mission is “Bringing a taste of Great Britain to the Great Plains.”

Sure enough, in addition to fish and chips, Lawrence diners now have access to decidedly ’cross-the-pond specialties such Steak and Kidney Pie, Scotch Egg Salad and few choices of Butties (singular, that’s Butty, a sandwich served on crusty buttered bread). There’s also Doner Kebabs — gyros that, while not indigenous to the U.K., are common fare across western Europe thanks to immigrants from the Middle East.

Queen Lizzy’s high-ceilinged, hole-in-the-wall space has a handful of tables downstairs and a handful more upstairs in a loft overlooking the main level. Of course there are Union Jacks on the walls.

Surrey, England, native Matt Poulton opened the restaurant in October. There’s no permanent signage outside, so look for the red Queen Lizzy’s poster in the window instead.

Queen Lizzy’s has also begun dabbling in breakfast. Black pudding, anyone?
