Replay Records to release album by local rockers Dry Bonnet

Members of Lawrence rock outfit Dry Bonnet have been playing together in various bands over the years and came to know Brad Shanks of local label Replay Records by sharing show bills. Now, Replay is putting out a seven-inch record for the guys and throwing a release party 10 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Replay Lounge, 946 Massachusetts St.

“After South by Southwest last summer, we were keeping our fingers crossed they (Replay Records) would put it out and they did. It was just up to us to get a decent recording,” says Ben Kimball, guitarist.

That recording was captured in band member Seth Wiese’s basement. The record will feature two songs: “Hey You,” an original song, on the A side and a cover of Echo and the Bunnymen’s “Do It Clean” on the B side. In fact, they were made before the deal was struck for the seven inch.

“We just recorded these for the heck of it,” Wiese said about the cover and other tracks. “We were hoping to put out a 45 with two originals on one side and the cover on the other. There just wasn’t enough room for that, but this is still gonna be good.”

The seven-inch is the sixth release for the still-young Replay Records label. Its first, “Cheap Beer,” a compilation of Lawrence and Kansas City bands, featured a cut by Dry Bonnet as well as Shanks’ band Mouthbreathers.

“I’ve known all of them for a while and we wanted to do this for a while, but we just always had these projects stacked up in front of them,” Shanks said about Dry Bonnet. “It was time to put out this seven-inch.”

The band, label personnel and friends will celebrate the release with Lawrence’s sleazy disco rock quartet Pale Hearts opening up.

The Dry Bonnet album will be available for purchase at replayrecordsusa.com.

I've heard my band described as many things, but "sleazy disco rock" is a first. Ick.
