Spring is where?

If you decided to wait an extra week to plant your spring crops, good call. If not, we have some bad news: Today won't look very much like spring. The National Weather Service forecast calls for a morning mix of snow and rain in Douglas County. Temperatures could be below freezing in the 7 to 11 a.m. window, with things warming up a few degrees and starting to dry out after the lunch hour. But after midnight, the freezing temps will return, dropping to as low as 24 degrees by 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. By noon Tuesday, though, the cold snap will have passed and we'll be back in the 50s.

Science champ

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran will receive the Champion of Science Award from the Science Coalition, a nonprofit organization of more than 50 of the nations top research universities including Kansas University, at 9:30 a.m. at the Dole Institute, 2350 Petefish Drive. The award recognizes members of Congress for their support of science research conducted at universities and national labs across the country. The senator will be presented the award by KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little on behalf of the Science Coalition. Free to attend, but seating is limited and RSVP is required. Call 785-864-7100 for more info.

Preschool arts

Finally, the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., today opens a new art-based preschool exhibition to kick off the week. Work from local preschool students will be highlighted through Sunday in the exhibit that seeks to illuminate the roots of imagination through fearless creativity. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
