Waggle Dance exhibit opens Friday at Arts Center

“Waggle Dance,” a new exhibit by Lawrence Arts Center ceramics artist-in-residence Kyla Strid, will open to the public this Friday with an artist reception from 5-9 p.m. at the Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.

Strid created a number of works within the natural world framework: small “buzz cups,” similar to sake glasses, with bees painted on the surfaces; tiles with a single abstract grass stalk painted on each one, which will line the wall of the gallery; and cylinders with a gradient glaze to resemble grain elevators to be displayed across from the tiles.

In the exhibition, Strid parallels her journey to becoming a ceramics artist to that of a worker bee, in a constant cycle of going out to survey an area for resources and returning to report back on its findings.

Waggle Dance will run through July 25. In addition to the reception, there will be an Insight Art Talk with Strid at the Arts Center at 7 p.m. Monday. Look for an in-depth story about Strid and the exhibition in Sunday's Journal-World.
