Americana Music Academy to launch artist-in-residence program next week

Lawrence's Americana Music Academy will launch its new artist-in-residence program next week with a series of private lessons, workshops and a concert with acclaimed singer-songwriter Matt Nakoa.

Nakoa's residency includes private lessons (in songwriting, voice and piano) Monday through Wednesday, a songwriting workshop Tuesday at 7 p.m. and a house concert with Americana executive director Rachel Black at 7 p.m. Wednesday, all at the Americana Music Academy, 1419 Massachusetts St.

Originally from rural New York, Nakoa's resume includes performances throughout India, the White House and regular tours with noted folk artist Tom Rush. He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a 2014 winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival's prestigious New Folk Competition.

The songwriter's workshop costs $20, and entry to the house concert is $10. Seating is limited and tickets are available on a first come, first served basis. For more information, or to register, call 830-9640 or email
