Went here recently after deciding we needed to try more "different" and local restaurants. Big mistake. Our food was unimpressive to say the least. The descriptions on the menu sound very interesting, but the actual dishes were less than flavorful and extremely small. If you order salmon, you get one small fillet of salmon on a saucer and that's it. No vegetables. No rice. You WILL leave hungry. Even worse, our waitress gave us what can only be described as the worst service I can remember ever getting anywhere. She basically ignored us the entire time - never refilled our drinks, forgot to bring one of the two entrees (you'd think it would seem odd to bring one person their dinner and leave the other with nothing) and never checked on us to see how we were doing. We had to get everything from the hostess since she was nearby and we could get her attention. She couldn't even bother to come collect her bill. We never even received an apology for forgetting our food. There are plenty of local places who pride themselves on great food and even better service - Give them your business. I wouldn't waste my time here.

Recently went here for the first time looking for something different. Turned out to be the absolute worst experience dining out in Lawrence I've ever had. The food looked interesting, but was not very flavorful and the portions were EXTREMELY small. Our waitress completely forgot one of the meals and made no apology when we had to ask the hostess where the rest of our food was. She never refilled our drinks (not once), dropped off the check without comment and never came back to get our money. The hostess ended up serving us more than our waitress simply because we were able to get her attention. Do not waste your time here. There's plenty of other locally owned restaurants that pride themselves on having quality service and food. These people don't even care.

The spicy potatoes with the brava sauce were outstanding, but the chicken breast was lame. The cold plate with the eggplant mashup was fine, except they give you two cups of eggplant but only eight crostini to eat it with. We had to keep asking for more crostini, which was a drag. I ordered a bottled beer, and it arrived without a glass. After getting a glass, the empty beer bottle sat on the edge of our table for 30 minutes.

If you want tapas, save your time and money and drive up to La Bodega in KC.

Recently went for first time. The menu is very interesting and appealing. What we ordered (4 dishes) were all quite good and different. The lamb was especially good! Our waitress was friendly, but a little "ditzy" and slow. The prices are not low, but it's a nice place and we hope to go back with many people; the best way to order would be to have a group and share the dishes! Nice to have a new choice in town!

Thank you guys for an awesome experience. Tanner was great and the whole evening was something to remember. Sangria was wonderful and the food was cooked to perfection.

Thanks again guys!

We decided to eat here on a lark, having always wanted to try tapas. We tried four different items from the "hot tapas" menu, and were very pleased with everything we ordered! It was a nice meal for two people. The waitress was good...she wasn't absent for long periods of time, but she didn't hover.

About my only complaint would be that the prices were a bit high, which means that we won't be going back very often. But we will definitely go back...there are items on the menu that I'm looking forward to trying!

This is so delicious and fun! Go with a few friends and share! Try the chorizo/manchego cheese dip and the mushrooms. Great!

Although the description says "Ethiopian", it's not. It's definitely Spanish cuisine. They have an authentic Spanish chef who makes authentic tapas. I was pleasantly surprised by not only the food, but also the atmosphere and service. Ole has become one of my favorite restaurants in Lawrence!!!

Spanish cuisine, great food, great atmosphere, chech it out, not ethiopian food anymore!

Fairly authentic. Had valintines day dinner there. Great romatntic feel to it. The owner is a great guy, as nice as anyone in Lawrence, makes sure everything is more than ok. The tapas were fairly authentic (better than I expected in Lawrence) and the papas bravas were outstanding, but the tortilla espanola were soggy and could use some improvement.
Great place though.

I've been here four times, and each time the food is high quality. The owner is incredibly nice and he always stops by our table to check on our food and service. I would recommend it to everyone. Try something new and you won't be disappointed.

Service was not bad but not exceptional. The food, however, had enough oil in it to solve the energy crisis! It was tasty, but was so greasy that I had horrible indigestion afterward.

Just ate here for the first time today - food was great, as was service. It was a little exensive, but what I ordered was an all you can eat of the 5 vegetarian items plus a combo of the spicy and not spicy meat. It was well worth the $s to get to try that many dishes at one time. I will be returning frequently - can't wait to try the breakfast!

I've eaten here around 6 times since they opened. Love the food, particularly the vegetarian dishes. Service has been spotty, but is definitely improving from their first month in business.

I ate there last night with my wife who is a vegitarian. The waiter was nice and pretty well informed about the dishes. We ordered "Chef's Choice" and just let them pick what to serve us. I had a beef tip plate while my wife and I shared a large platter of assorted veg. dishes. They ranged from good to excellent. The staff twice asked us if we'd like anything else (and topped off drinks). It was a bit of a slow night (about 7 tables full) so the service was great. All in all, if you like that type of food they do it very well and I would recommend that anyone who never has had this type of cuisine give it a try. Oh and the ethnic beers are GREAT! compliments to the dishes.

I loved the food but it was too expensive for lunch. I wouldprefer a real lunch menu with smaller portions and lower prices.

To be fair, I didn't even get a chance to eat here, let alone a glass of water. My girlfriend and I showed up around 7 on a Thursday night. A really friendly guy seated us and gave us menus (even asked us where we wanted to sit). However, it was the only time we'd talk to him. The place was about 2/3 to 3/4 full and there were only 2 people working that I saw the whole time. It wasn't crazy busy in there, but it definitely wasn't "slow". Anywho, it didn't seem like a very good strategy at peak dinner time in downtown Lawrence. Anyway, long story short: We sat there for a good 20-25 minutes (maybe longer) and gave up and walked out because we hadn't even been asked what drinks we wanted. It's a shame because the food on the menu sounded REALLY good and we were REALLY hungry (part of our motivation to go eat somewhere else). Anyway, we went down to the Aladdin Cafe and received prompt, excellent service (love that place).

I went ahead and gave a rating on the vibe because I did like the way the place looked inside. The music was a pinch too loud for me, but other than that it was great. And as far as the value, we had a lot of time to look at the prices. The prices seemed pretty good for what you got.

I've noticed the mixed reviews of this place on this site and I wonder if maybe they just don't staff well enough at dinner time? I just hope I can convince my girlfriend to give the place another chance. I'd like to go back sometime when they've hopefully got their shit more together (it is a new location after all).

I went at lunchtime and I didn't have a problem with service at all. The food was great, the waiters were awesome. We even had the chef/owner (?) come and ask us if we enjoyed the food. I highly recommend this place.

Worst service in town. It's too bad, because it's a nice place, good location, friendly staff members. BUT, when it takes 30 minutes (i'm not exaggerating) to get your water, there's a problem. An hour and a half later, my one order of food arrived, but I had to get it to go, since it had taken so long. She took an additional 20 minutes retrieving my bill. I'll never return. The lamb was decent, but overpriced. It's very upsetting that this has taken place in such a great town, and near superior ethnic retaurants. I'll choose them next time.

The lentil appetizers were great, but the rest of the food was uninspiring. It was too greasy, the service was WAY too slow, and the menu lacks clear descriptions of what the food is like. I still might go back, though, just to have a salad and those incredible lentil turnovers...

mccall_s 17 years, 11 months ago on Ole Tapas Bar

The service the night I went was way too slow. The appetizers came after 30 minutes. The entree took another hour. So we were there about two and a half hours. There is a nice view out of the windows and the server was nice. The vegetarian plate is very good, but some dishes are very spicy. The ethiopian stout is really tasty.

taiwantea 17 years, 11 months ago on Ole Tapas Bar

The food is not fresh. It seems that they microwave it all then bring it out. The wait staff isn't very knowledgable about the food other than the African names of them. I would much rather eat Indian Palace, plus Addis's prices are too high.

Nick Spacek 17 years, 11 months ago on Ole Tapas Bar

Meh. Everything tasted the same.

The spicy red lentils kick ass, however.

I am so glad there is an Ethiopian Restaurant in Lawrence. If you like this one, remember they have a place on 39th street in KC
