Understanding the global commons – the shared physical, biological and cultural resources of the planet – is the grand challenge facing society in the 21st century. Our response to this challenge is The Commons at the University of Kansas, a catalyst for unconventional thinking, interdisciplinary inquiry, and unexpected discoveries across the sciences, arts and humanities.
The Commons is a partnership between the Biodiversity Institute, the Hall Center for the Humanities, and the Spencer Museum of Art.
The Commons is both a physical and intellectual space where people come together to establish common ground from which they may express and explore uncommon ideas for the common good. Commons activities can happen anywhere on campus, however, The Commons itself is housed in Spooner Hall. This is a vibrant and active space that can serve many purposes. We hope you’ll join us in The Commons and help foster this new understanding.
The great hall and apse can accommodate a wide range of events from small, private meetings to large, public lectures. Priority is given to those events hosted by or in partnership with The Commons or that advance the mission of The Commons. The space can be used for formal dinners, art exhibitions, receptions, workshops, conferences, colloquia and symposia, classes, and informal gatherings.
Wireless internet is available throughout the space. A KU login is required. A temporary login can be provided to visitors affiliated with a formal program at The Commons.
Audio Visual features in the space include:
* two high resolution projectors with accompanying screens
* DVD/VHS, document camera, auxiliary connection (great hall)
* podium with laptop connection and microphone (great hall)
* wireless microphones available for performances, panel discussions, audience participation, etc. (great hall and apse)
* 60” plasma screen with DVD player (apse)
* distributed sound system throughout both rooms
* CD player and MP3 player connection (both rooms)
The facility can seat up to 200 for a formal lecture (120 chairs are available) and 100 for a formal dinner or performance. Tables and chairs for conferences, classes, small group meetings and similar events are also provided.
University of Kansas departments and affiliated groups and organizations may rent the facility (the standard fee is $500 a day). Non-university groups may be eligible to rent the facility, but certain restrictions and additional fees may apply. Groups using the facility must comply with all federal, state, city, and University laws and regulations.
