Long the quintessential Lawrence steak joint, Don's vibe hasn't changed much over its 35 years though the menu has. What the humble little joint lacks in ambience, it usually makes up for in big, juicy slabs of beef. Steaks are definitely the main attraction, but the seafood, chicken, ribs and sides are also plentiful.

Thanks, Kathi for the POSTIVE comment! I too was wondering how someone could think a lobster/steak special anywhere would be $15! My husband & I dined at Don's just this past weekend with another couple. They were packed. Our server did a great job of getting not only us but all diners around us served in a timely manner. And the food was great! We dine there at least 3-4 times per month because we know we can count on the consistency & quality of their food & service.

That comment that is posted is over a year and a half old. What person would think they could get lobster and steak for $15.00? I have been going to Dons for over 20 years and have never had a bad experience there. The food is great and the staff is always friendly even when they are busy as can be. They also have good lunch specials and that isnt even shown in the business hours listed. Hats off to Dons!!

Don's is getting a bad rap here. It's got terrible atmosphere, and yeah, the menus are grungy, and that one middle-aged hostess really needs to take a class in how to smile. But I can go there and get good fried chicken, a twice-baked potato, soup, salad and that great little basket of crackers for about $12, and I walk away full and happy. It's not the place it used to be, there's no doubt, in fact it's not the place it was just five years ago. But Don's isn't horrible. And who orders lobster tail at a place like Don's anyway?

I had a blah eating experience there 4 years ago, but thought I'd give it another try. Went in last night. Got seated right away, and given sticky menus (one with a green glob of something disgusting on it). Looked at the prices, and realized that steaks cost more than at Longhorn's. You know that old refrigerator smell that bait and tackle shops have - well, it was so strong in there that, after 10-15 min of not being waited on, I was so queasy from it that I was afraid I'd get sick, so, walked out. HOW is it still in business??

I worked at Dons Steak house for almost 2 years. i was a dishwasher, the floors in the back were disgusting. when i first started working there, cockroaches were crawling all over the walls, plates, and floor. the manager there was horrible she didn't know what she was doing. if you were to see the back you'd never want to eat there ever.

Sure Don's is a great place to take your mother in law, if you never want her to come back to Lawrence again! But if you are looking for a great steak and some ambience, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Unfortunately, I have eaten at Don's several times, and each time it seemed to get worse, that is why I have chosen to grill my own steak, as long as I live in Lawrence. It is probably true that Don's has the most affordable steak when you compare it to Hereford House or Longhorns, but who still wants to pay an outrageous price for a poor meal. Everytime we went there it was the same story. The lathargic host is consistently rude, and always gave off a negative vibe, like she really didn't want us in her restaurant. Doesn't the owner know how important a first impression is? After being seated in the so-called non-smoking section, which by the way, may as well be called the second-hand smokers section, (due to the 5-foot non-smoke blocking partion that divides the smokers from the non-smokers) we were pleasantly greeted by the cocktail waiter/waitress. Please take note, this was the only positive aspect of our dining experience, because the cocktail waitress/bartender seemed to be the only person who was happy to see us. The ambience is completely lacking, in fact, I've been in libraries and gas stations that have had more ambience than Don's. After our waitress (who smelled like an ashtray) took our order, she quickly brought out our salads. The salads, which consisted of mostly white, not green lettuce, are overflowing the tiny little plastic cafeteria plates on which they are served. Not to mention, the waitress had stacked the salads on top of each other. Only two of the four steaks were prepared the way we had ordered them, and the lobster tail had the texture and taste of a pencil eraser. On my way out, I stopped by the bar area to view the carnival themed decor which is nothing short of white trash memorbilia. From there, WE RAN to our vehicle reciting the wonderful things Lawrence has to offer...DON'S STEAKHOUSE NOT INCLUDED!!

I had the luxary of eating at don's steak house a few weeks ago. I tell you what it was probably the worst and most expensive bad meal I have ever had.between me and my fiancee it cost us $70.00 that's without a starter or a desert.the atmosphere is awful reminded me of a truck stop. And fair warning don't get the lobster tail they have no clue on how to prepare lobster.I was like chewing on a rubber ball. You know I don't mind spending money on dinner but I have to be able to enjoy my meal.If you want to go there for a steak listen to this warning.Go to Longhorns or capital grill, yahoo's or even herford house. You might spend the same amount of money maybe a little more depending on how fancy you want to get,But you won't be writing on how disappointing of an experience it was.Word to the wise avoid dons steak house!! Unless you enjoy throwing your money away which in that case let me know I will be happy to give you my address so you can send it to me for convenience sake.

I worked for Don's Steak House in the 70's when it was located on South Iowa. When Don Scott owned the place it was a good place to eat. After we moved to the present location and he sold it, it became highly overpriced and food quality sucks. I would not recommend anybody eat there unless they have $60-70 to throw away on a so called steak dinner.

I have eaten at Don's Steak House a few times in the past couple years and each time I am equally suprised and disappointed in the prices, food and overall environment. The whole place is outdated and appears unclean. This place will not be getting my business.

Why is this restaurant still in business? The environment is gross. The food is sub-par. The service is lousy. Is the Eating Out section of the LJWorld a review or an advertisement? The write-up made this place sound great. I think there should be a disclaimer on the Eating Out section stating that it is not an impartial review but a promotion of local restaurants - whether they're good or not.

I took my daughter to this place, and we were very disapointed with just about everything. Place was not clean, tables a little unclean, waitress wasn't bad, food very overpriced for what you get, and I don't think that they know how to prepare steak. I don't think that I will ever go there again.

For God's sakes DO NOT order the lobster tail at this place. They have not idea how to prepare properly. The steaks are marginal, another opinion said chewy and that is a good description, salads not fresh atmosphere dark dreary. Service ok, a bit overpriced for the quality.

I recently went to Don's and ordered the 'special' of the evening. The special was a hunk of steak and lobster tail. Our waitress quoted us $14.99. What a deal! The food came, it was dried out, but, ok. The bill came and we were charged double. When I questioned the bill to the manager on staff, she said that we should not have been told the $14.99 price, that had we read the menu, we'd realize that had to be a mistake and that, 'I oughta charge you $30!'. she refused to give us a refund, despite the huge bill. she said she'd shave off $5.00 but nothing more, and that it was our fault. Horrible! never ever again will I go. A restaurant with cheap napkins should not charge anyone $60 for dinner for two, no drinks.
