Went to Gran-Daddy's about a year ago with a Canadian friend who wanted to try real KC-style barbecue. I had high hopes, but unfortunately, the barbecue was just mediocre. (To be fair, the servers were perfectly nice and friendly.) Bigg's and Biemer's serve decent barbecue in Lawrence, but if you want the really good stuff you have to get out to KCK and go to Oklahoma Joe's. Sounds like it used to be good; I will probably try it again sometime.

Sounds like it was good in the past, but I've been twice this summer and it truly is terrible. The sauce is ketchup-based slop, the meat is dry and served on a grease-soaked bun. I've been at lunch time twice and not seen another soul eating here.

When they are good, they are good. When they are bad, it is downright nasty. My last time eating there I ordered da bomb, what I got was a grease soaked hot dog bun and frozen potato's covered in oil. So bad my dog would not eat it, I have the video on my phone to prove it. If I had been a first time customer I may have returned demanding my money back, back but as time went on I noticed quality becoming very spotty. I use to eat here so frequently they joked about me working for them in place for food. They just became way to inconsistent. There is one guy in the back that makes food that obviously does not care, and this one employee ruined it for me, forever. If you decide to try this place I hope it is bad, cause that one time you brag it up and take friends there will be the time they really suck and you will feel like a jerk for saying how good it is. Trust me

Just had DaBomb when they catered here at work. VERY good pulled-pork... Will be putting this on the list of places to take the family when they come to town.

Gran-daddys is easily the best bbq place in lawrence and probably the region. too bad it gets very little recognition and many people don't know about it...even those who have lived in lawrence for years

This is one of the best kept secrets in all of Lawrence and KC for that matter. The pulled pork sandwich cannot be beat and their baked beans are incredible! My job has me traveling almost non stop and I've eaten BBQ from many many places in the US and Granddaddys is still the best! Arthur who? Gates what?

I tried Da Bomb. not good. If you've ever had a good burnt end sandwich you will be heavily disappointed. They finely chop the meat and smother it with way too much sweet BBQ sauce. I couldn't even taste the meat at all and was definately unimpressed.

Be sure to ask Granddaddy for some his "afro sausages" - patent pending. Really really really good (when he has some ready)!

Can't get enough of this place. What could be more legit than Gran-daddy himself out front with his Tide bottle of god-knows-what smoking the most amazing ribs in town in the world's oldest smoker?

Absolutely love this place. Da Bomb sandwich is NOT TO BE MISSED -- it's bits of beef and burnt ends in his amazing sauce on a soft roll... so good!

And also even the small size fries is huge enough to share. Love love love this place.

I love Grandads food, his restaraunt and his family is truly the greatest!!! If you haven't had their food yet, then you know nothing about where the real home cooked food is. I gotta go, I gotta have da bomb sandwich now! It's shredded brisquet smothered in their homemade bbq sauce topped with 2 huge buns, to die for!! Mouth watering yet?

I don't know why I've always thought New York had the best barbeque, perhaps it has been because I'm from New York and I have never been able to find any Kansas barbeque as good as the barbeque I get when I'm in New York. Well, all of that has changed - after eating barbeque at almost all of the Lawrence sites and some of the "famous" Kansas City sites, I have finally tasted barbeque that worth going back to get again and again [which seems to be exactly what I have been doing lately]. Gran Daddy's BBQ has the kind of barbeque that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. I would highly suggest your trying their special style of barbeque [oh yea, and do try their sandwich called DaBomb]

For GOOD BBQ Lawrence has only Gran-daddy's and the Vermont St. BBQ. Vermont street has unfortunately moved to Mass street and stopped delivering; therefore the charm and very good BBQ at Gran-daddy's moves it unquestionably into the #1 spot of BBQs in Lawrence. Also, we have all known and liked Courtee and family for a long time, and many of us will drive over the bridge to do business with him.

EXCELLENT baby back ribs. Hope to try the smoked cat fish soon!

Very good!!

Worth a try, Vermont St is its only competition locally.
